ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL COUNCIL
WELCOME FROM THE DIRECTOR
Hello delegates!
It is an honour to welcome you to the Indian School Muscat – Model United Nations 2021 and especially to the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). The committee will be headed by Director Amritya Singh and Asst. Director Jheel Thanki.
The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), under the overall authority of the General Assembly, coordinates the economic and social work of the United Nations and the UN family of organizations. As the central forum for discussing international economic and social issues and for formulating policy recommendations, the Council plays a key role in fostering international cooperation for development.
The topics for discussion are ‘The Socio-Economic Effects of Global Pandemics’ and ‘Combating the Social Evil of Discrimination’. I am sure all the delegates will enjoy themselves and will actively participate in the intense debates and discussions that will go on regarding the above topics.
Throughout your journey at ISM-MUN 2021, you will be assisted by the DAIS and given full support. We urge all delegates to make full use of the resources provided and research as well as they can, thereby ensuring an eventful and intriguing session throughout. Being well informed about your country’s policies, viewpoints, history and stance on the above-mentioned topics will certainly give you an edge during the many debates we look forward to have. Lastly, you can be assured that the confidence and sense of satisfaction with which you depart is something you will cherish for many more years to come. With that, we wish you the best, and truly pledge to make this experience a memorable one.
AMRITYA SINGH
DIRECTOR
I am Amritya Singh of Class 12-A, and this is going to be my fourth year in ISM MUN. It's going to be an honour serving as the Director of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). Besides MUN my interest lies in sports, music and travel.
My journey in the MUN began in 2018 as a delegate of Afghanistan in UNHRC. The following year, I was part of League of Arab States (LAS) and was allotted the country of Qatar. I contributed in presenting suggestions and ideas to resolve the conflict in an effective manner. As a result, I was awarded the best delegate of my Committee. In 2020, I was given the chance to be part of the DAIS of ISM MUN 2020. I was the Assistant Director of Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ).
MUN helped me express my views about the various issues in the world and I found it to be a perfect platform for young leaders like us to express ourselves and participate in important decision making processes. We stand to gain knowledge and values about life through various debate sessions and research involved. I am sure that everyone will enjoy themselves and have good time in the ISM MUN 2021.
JHEEL THANKI
ASSISTANT DIRECTOR
Greetings delegates!
A very warm welcome to the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). I am Jheel Thanki, and it is an absolute honour to be staffing as your Assistant Director for ISMMUN 2021.
To skim through my past experiences, I’ve been awarded Best Position Paper in ECOFIN at ISMMUN 2019, an experience that truly opened my eyes to the world of MUNing. The next year, I tried my best to indulge in debates and put forward ideas whenever the opportunity opened up, winning the Distinguished Delegate award as a delegate in UNSC.
When I started out, the very concept of an ‘MUN’ was new to me. The notion of representing a country seemed fascinating enough, but, as I realized later, there was so much more to it. Something I still often recall is the air of empowerment that can be so strongly sensed during a conference. Initially, you may be afraid to speak up or daunted at the thought of raising questions, but soon enough you’ll find yourself tapping into your inner debater, perhaps even discovering a side of yourself you’ve never seen before. In the end, just give it your best, and you will have an unparalleled experience forever imprinted in your memory.
Happy MUNing!
